projecten in Yele.
project fnancieel zelfvoorzienend is. Daartoe moet
Hoewel
Fred Nederlof,
voorzitter LHF
In 2011, the Lion Heart Foundation saw in a new phase
and our efforts were fully focused on our projects in
Yele. The frst phase of the construction of our frst own
hospital was realized, the water purifcation installation
was renovated and the hydro-electric power plant was
completely reconstructed, an enormous effort for the
whole team. We have been active now in Sierra Leone for
six years and we are proud of what has been achieved.
Awaiting the arrival of a tropical doctor, the new
hospital was staffed by our Filipino nurses and some
local personnel. At the same time a start was made
with the frst expansion of the hospital with a 30-bed
ward and an X-ray room. Earlier this year a digital
X-ray machine was installed in this room, the frst in
the country! Further expansions, which amongst others
include a maternity ward, are planned for the second
half of 2012, while the tropical doctor has strengthened
our team as of February 1st. By this we will have realized
a fully equipped hospital with good care and excellent
diagnostic facilities, complete with 24 hours per day,
7 days per week electricity and running water. To our
Western ears it all sounds quite normal but I can assure
you that in a developing country this is not just a matter
of course!
However we still have a long way to go before we have
reached sustainable solutions. In our view a project is
only sustainable if it is fnancially self-supporting. For
this the 'Best of Both Worlds' program has to be the
basis. The revenues of business enterprises are to be
used to keep the hospital in operation. To this end some
years ago we built the palm oil factory and from 2012
onwards, the hydro-electric plant will also generate
income. Although the factory has performed markedly
better during 2011, revenues are still not suffcient, and it
is expected that this will remain so for the next couple of
years. For the time being we are fully dependent on your
donations. I very much would like to thank you again
for you trust in our organisation and your indispensible
support. I hope wholeheartedly that in the coming years
you are willing to help us in realising these splendid and
useful projects.
In this annual report you will fnd a summary of our
activities in 2011, together with a fnancial report and
our plans for next year. I wish you much pleasure in
reading this report.
