3.8 Onderwijs in Yele
Sinds 2008 ondersteunen
wij de Junior Secondary School (onderbouw) in Yele
met een schoolfonds. Leerlingen komen daarvoor in
Hier
3.9 e-Luma project
opgezet. Inmiddels, na een aantal jaar ‘broeden’ aan
de Carnegie Mellon University en het prestigieuze
MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), is het
project omgedoopt in ‘e-Luma Development Centre’.
is.
Education in Yele
LHF is dedicated to improving education in the region.
Many (older) children are no longer able to further
their education due to lack of hard cash for school fees.
Besides the costs for school uniforms, books and other
materials, primary education in Sierra Leone is for free.
Secondary education is not free and schools are totally
dependent on school fees and other contributions. LHF
recognises the fundamental need for schooling in a
developing country and has commenced the phased
renovation of the Yele Junior Secondary School, including
the realisation of a boarding house for school meals for
all scholars and overnight accommodation for children
who live in more remote areas. Financed by LHF, the
local carpenter delivered 125 school desks. In 2011 the
Dutch Biblionef Foundation donated a large amount
of notebooks which have been distributed to all schools
in Yele. In addition, LHF has been supporting the Junior
Secondary School in Yele with a school fund since 2008.
Pupils qualify in case their parents or family cannot
pay the school fees. The number of school children has
increased to over 800, while LHF now pays school fees
for 120 of them. Only with satisfactory results at the
end of the school year LHF pays the fees for the next
year. As soon as the hydro-electric power plant becomes
operational an internet connection will be set up
in the school.
To have a Senior Secondary School in Yele is much desired
by the population so that the children are able to
conclude full secondary schooling with a certifcate. The
establishment of a school for vocational education in the
region is under investigation.
e-Luma project
In 2007 the student organization 'Students in Free
Enterprise' of the Delft University of Technology (SIFE
Delft) started the 'Community Bazaar' project in Yele.
Now, after years of incubation at the Carnegie Mellon
University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
it has been renamed the ‘e-Luma Development Centre’.
A research-backed development concept, where ‘e’
stands for electricity, entrepreneurship and education
while luma means market place in the local Temne
language. The project is supported by StartFund based
